bye bye zebulon

belashayevich:

the first gig i ever tried to get in new york was at zebulon. i did what i thought i was supposed to do: dropped off a demo cd, waited a week, called to see if they listened. i can’t remember who picked up - which of the brothers (they’re brothers, right?) - but a heavy french accent told me “if we did not call you back we did not like your music!”

i hated the place for years, even as i started playing there. then i realized that i would’ve been way better off hanging out there getting drunk hearing music seeing people having fun. then i got over it. i’m sorry to see them go.

where will we go when there’s nowhere to go?

Our minds are blown: these socks, made sometime between A.D. 250 and A.D. 420 wouldn’t look out of place on, say, a Prada runway today.

Today’s show: an archive interview with avant garde composer John Cage, who’s the subject of international celebrations this year, marking the centennial of his birth.

Also from the archive…an interview with the late Robert Moog. A festival of electronic and visionary music in tribute to him takes place this weekend.

“we’re gonna skip the whole game ‘cause we won’t have time for what’s to come”

also incredible that the performance of this piece caused a labor dispute
